I apologize for the audio. It didn’t come out as clearly as I would’ve liked. Future videos will be better, I promise. I’m just too under the weather to use Audition today…
So, here is a really barebones look at my crazy vision for physically putting MicroZine in your hands as early as October 2024! My hope is, that will be the first Print issue. I will deliver the PDF file that you’ll then have to print on your end to turn into what you see in this video.
I’ll have another coming soon that will use white paper (not line paper) and show how I cut out the issue and essentially “put it together.” I’ll even have some of my own stories in there and print it out like an official issue.
Some things I’m thinking about when it comes to expecting readers to “build-it-themselves” for the time being are:
Not relying on printing back and front of each page.
Color vs. black and white. While I’d love to use color, not everyone will want to use their ink on that and therefore, the cover might need to just be words for the time being.
Would this entire process just be too much to expect someone to care enough to do?
Deciding on which stories will go in each quarterly issue can prove difficult if we get more than can fit (for the time being).
Keep in mind, all of this will become obsolete once paid subscriptions open up. Once that happens, then the printing job will be squarely in the hands of a printer (like Amazon or Lulu or IngramSpark) and the only thing readers will have to worry about is reading it once they receive it in the mail. A couple things that will become available once paid subscriptions happens:
Use of color throughout the issue.
More room for stories! The least amount of pages we have to use is 19, which nearly triples the number of stories!
No more “build-it-yourself” PDFs to print. The Zine will already be delivered to your mailbox.
In the coming months I’ll share what a mock-up will look like in other stages till we get to a look and feel that fits.
This looks great, Erica. As long as you have page numbers in place at the bottom center, all we have to do is print, collate and fold. Easy! I can't see that the blank pages would be a problem at all. A great project.
I love it! I obsessively worked on a zine when I was in high school during the time in the ‘90s when it was pretty popular. I like this updated version of it today with a PDF!
