Clothes make the man? Ha! Shoes make the outfit! Flats, stilettos, brogans or oxfords -- each a silent projection of personal style. I’ve built my wardrobe bottom up, on my aesthetic. Well-heeled footwear telegraphs prosperity, status, self-assuredness. Second-toe amputation, chronic foot pain, bones bent by bunions, simply the price paid.
Spring styles appeared in shops. Boulevard trees exploded with shocking-pink buds, unfurling green leaves mimicking the shoes’ palate. I fantasized outfits and accessories, auditioned soirees and partners for their debut. My beauties waited patiently.
I polished my toes and buffed callouses, anticipating the price drop, even as temperatures began to soar. Spring raced towards summer. Soon, new styles and colors would be displayed. Timing became critical. Act now or their style would be dated.
At lunch, I squeezed into an on-sale pair, the last in my size. Summer heat had swollen my feet to a smarting torture. No sale today.
